Boating accident cases are quite unique and most people don’t understand it. And the reason that they’re unique is that if you are on what we call navigable bodies of water, then a completely different body of laws apply. We call that the general maritime law.
So, California law, for example, does not apply to boating accidents in the ocean off the coast of California, on the Delta all the way up to Stockton. That’s general maritime law. If you’re on Lake Tahoe, which is a lake that is bordered by two different states, that too is general maritime law and a completely different body of laws apply. So you need someone that has the expertise in the general maritime law. Here at Venardi Zurada, myself in particular, I’ve basically lived my adult life on the water in boating activities in one way or another, ranging from five years in the United States Coast Guard performing marine law enforcement and search and rescue exercises, to working on an offshore oil rig after that in the marine construction fields and trades.
And now in my later life as an avid boater, I own and sail a 42-foot sailboat here on the bay. I own and operate a wakeboard boat on lakes, and I own and operate a fishing boat. I know it’s kind of weird to have all those boats, but I love boating. It’s part of my life and something that I’ve developed professional expertise in.
