A typical bicycle injury is a vehicle colliding with a bicycle in some way. Usually, a vehicle-on-bicyclist collision is more severe than a vehicle-on-vehicle collision. With a bicyclist, they are typically going at a good rate of speed and they’re completely unprotected except perhaps for a bike helmet. And so they’re not only higher up from the road, but there’s just nothing at all protecting them. So any kind of a collision to a bicyclist, even if a car is not going that fast, the person will either fall down, break a bone, they could injure their spine, they could have a traumatic brain injury. And so bicycle collisions are far more dangerous to the bicyclist. It’s very rare that a vehicle and bicycle collision results in no injuries or some light injuries.
It’s really important that the bicyclist tries and gets the police to come and document what has happened. By getting the police on the scene, they’re able to get witness statements, they’re able to get a neutral person like the police to come in and do a mini investigation of what has happened and that can establish the fault. The second thing that any bicyclist needs to do is to go and get treatment. It’s especially important to go and see a doctor, whether it’s at the emergency room or whether it’s at urgent care or your own family doctor if you’re experiencing concussion-type symptoms. At Venardi Zurada, we understand bike riding and we understand bike riding injuries. And our job is to make sure that you’re compensated for the harm that you sustained on your bike.
